Pollution is one of our biggest concerns these days. Air pollution is everywhere, along with water pollution, sound pollution, etc. There are frequent reports of oil spillages in the ocean polluting the marine life. Pollution is a big concern in the urban industrial areas. Air pollution seems to be on the rise especially in the last few years. Clean air is a rarity these days. Air pollution is a phenomenon which has infiltrated the domestic realm of your home. If clean fresh air is not available within the boundaries of your home, maintaining a healthy environment becomes a huge problem. This in turn would affect the well-being of all family members, especially children and the elderly. Air pollution can lead to many severe diseases of the respiratory tract. It causes diseases like asthma, bronchitis and other forms of allergies, both mild and severe. To ensure the well being of your family, it is very important to maintain a healthy home environment.

According to a survey, American families spend a lot of time (more than 90%) indoor. More than half of the illnesses today are caused by indoor air pollution. Indoor air pollution is mainly caused by microscopic particles like mold, mildew, bacteria, pollen, and dust mites. Other factors like smoke and odors also cause contribute to indoor air pollution. Sometimes, particles in deodorants also cause minor allergies among children. Pets are also a source of indoor air pollution, caused by their dander. These tiny microscopic particles lodge in the human respiratory system causing damage to the olfactory senses apart from causing lethargy, sneezing, sore throat and headaches.

One of the most poorly insulated parts of home is the attic stair. In the winter months, it causes cold drafts and dryness, in the summer, it leads to a humid atmosphere in doors leading to uneven temperature. Leaks also lead to dust particles invading the home. Mold and insects also enter the domestic boundaries through these leaks. This in turn leads to more domestic air pollution. Since the attic stair is devoid of any insulation, a lot of heating and cooling waste is caused which leads to a lot of energy loss.

Crawl spaces inside the house are a major breeding ground for all kinds of fungi, bacteria and mold. This happens because crawl spaces are inaccessible and sunlight hardly reaches these places as a result of they are dark and damp. Wood rot and mold growth are a direct result of this dampness.

Domestic appliances like water heaters and space heaters emit a lot of carbon monoxide, which is particularly harmful to human lungs. Gas and oil furnaces also emit carbon monoxide and so does motorized lawn equipment. Carbon monoxide poses a lot of health hazard for children and adults alike. Carbon monoxide poisoning causes sickness, lethargy and disorientation. It also causes severe damage to the physiological system as well as irreversible damage to the human nervous system. In large doses, carbon monoxide can be lethal.
